WHAT IS BREAST CANCER???

Breast Cancer is cancer that forms in tissues of the breast, usually the ducts (tubes that carry milk to the nipple) and lobules (glands that make milk).  In other words, breast cancer is a malignant (cancerous) growth that begins in the tissues of the breast, and cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells grow in an uncontrolled way.

HOW DOES BREAST CANCER START??

Breast Cancer is cells of the breast that start as a malignant tumor. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that spread to distant areas of the body or cells that grow into surrounding tissues. It is most common in women.

Some of the Symptoms of Breast Cancer:

  • a lump or a thickening in the breast or in the armpit
  • a change of size or shape of the mature breast
  • fluid (not milk) leaking from the nipple
  • a change of size or shape of the nipple
  • a change of color or texture of the nipple or the areola, or of the skin of the breast itself (dimples, puckers, rash)

Remember, early stages of breast cancer may not cause any pain or discomfort, but you should always have a regular mammogram and a clinical breast exam. Also, doing your self-breast exam can help you keep track of regular monthly changes because many lumps and rashes are benign (not cancerous) and may respond to proper early treatment. If you experience any symptoms that cause you concern, always seek professional health exam because it will help you understand the changes in your breasts.
